We Honor Veterans

We Honor Veterans

HPH Hospice has been accepted by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a partnering agency in their We Honor Veterans program.

America’s veterans have done everything asked of them in their mission to serve our country, and we believe it is never too late to give them a hero’s welcome home.
That’s why HPH Hospice is joining this national movement to serve veterans at the end of life, so that the men and women who served our country may live their final days in dignity and peace.

Benefits of Veteran-Centered Hospice Care
As a partnering agency in the We Honor Veterans program, our staff understand the unique needs of veterans, and are prepared to meet the specific challenges that veterans and their families may face at the end of life. In particular, the program will provide:

  • Staff trained to identify and treat service-related conditions, both physical and emotional. For example, the process of dying may exacerbate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans.
  • Hospice care tailored for the illnesses and conditions unique to each military era or war. For example, Korean War veterans may experience delayed symptoms of severe cold exposure, including the development of skin cancer in frostbite scars.
  • Caregiver education about veterans’ unique end-of-life experiences
  • A veteran-to-veteran recognition program to honor veterans’ service and sacrifices
  • The Truth About Hospice and VA Benefits
Understanding VA benefits can be confusing, and many people are uncertain which services are covered and which are not. Below, we dispel some of the most common myths about hospice care and VA benefits.

Myth: the VA does not pay for hospice services
Truth: the VA pays for all services of HPH Hospice (and veterans eligible can access services through that program)

Myth: hospice care must be provided in a VA facility
Truth: hospice services are available in private homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes or wherever one calls home

Myth: using hospice services will disqualify a veteran for VA benefits
Truth: accessing hospice services will not affect a veteran’s eligibility for any VA benefits to which they are otherwise entitled
